Screening 05. Dheepan and La Haine
For our fifth screening we’re excited to be screening Dheepan and La Haine; two staple films of contemporary European cinema, exploring the common themes of struggle, poverty and social conflict within the French working class.
17.30pm: Dheepan (2015)

Jacques Audiard’s Palme d’Or winning Dheepan is a story never more relevant in 2019; the story of Sri Lankan refugees and their struggle to integrate into a society and community equally as inhospitable as the conflict zone they left behind.
SHORT FILM: 7.40pm: Bleaklands (2018)
(Director: Greg Hodge)
Bleakland follows the life of a 16-year-old Jordan who’s only dream is to one day leave, but things aren’t that easy. Living with his alcoholic mother and abusive step father, he and his 14-year-old sister, Laura face daily problems. We see Jordan trying to make the right choice throughout the film, while facing obstacles from the close-minded beings. This film explores what it’s like to live somewhere like Bleakland and the daily struggles these individuals face.
8.00pm: La Haine (1995)

(Cast: Vincent Cassel, Hubert Koundé, Saïd Taghmaoui)
Held in supreme regard among film lovers and critics alike, La Haine shines a light on France’s social ills. Set over twenty consecutive hours, the film explores the lives of three friends living in a multi-ethnic French housing project in the aftermath of a riot.
